For 80 years, Metropolitan YMCA Singapore has stood as a pillar of hope, growth, and transformation. From our beginnings in 1946 to the present day, we have empowered individuals, strengthened families, and served communities with compassion and purpose.

This legacy continues — carried forward by those who believe in making a difference through everyday acts of kindness, leadership, and faith.

  • 1946–1950s – Our Birth

    Founded by Dr Chen Su Lan as the “Chinese YMCA” to serve the local community based on Christian principles.

  • 1950s–1960s – Our Teens

    Found a new home at Palmer Road (1957) to establish a community hub that hosts youth camps, hostel facilities, and early family support services. Staying rooted in the midst of our expansion.

  • 1970s–1980s – Our youth

    New programmes in education, sports, and community outreach brought hope to thousands across Singapore. Seeking to be relevant in the community.

  • 1980s–2010s – young adulthood

    Tech, innovation, and stronger inclusion efforts — empowering learners, leaders, and lives in a changing world. Working towards sustainability.

  • 2010s–2020s adulthood

    Preparing for a new era of community transformation through continuously improving existing programmes and establishing new partnership.

  • 2010s-now - maturing stage

    Celebrating 80 years with renewed purpose. Investing in people, planet, and partnerships as we shape the next chapter together.

  • 1946

    Dr Chen Su Lan making his inaugural speech.

  • 1947 - 1966

    The first building of Chinese YMCA at Selegie Road.

  • 1950s

    The first Students’ Summer Camp.

  • 11 march 1966

    A fire at Selegie Road damaged our property.

  • 1957

    Found a new home at Palmer Road.

  • 1978

    Construction of new Tanglin Centre Building began.

    Opening of membership campaign by Dr Chen Su Lan: the beginning of various community outreach programmes (click next to find out more)

  • Practical education

    Car Tuning Workshops, Tailoring Course, Chinese Calligraphy & Painting, Vegetable & Fruit Carving, Guitar Courses and Oratory Competitions.

  • Launch of dance classes

    Square Dance / International Folk Dance

  • Commercial classes

  • physical education & sports

    Bodybuilding Contests, Indoor Archery, Canoeing & Cross Country on Wheels

  • martial arts

    Osaka YMCA invited Hideohiro Maekawa to demonstrate Karate to locals. Martial Arts were ceased in the mid-1990s due to review of our Association Interests.

  • Christian emphasis

    Christian Fellowship, Weekly Christian Fellowship Meetings and Alpha Courses were held at our premises.

  • regional workshops

    Various workshops on Leadership, Applied Behavioural Sciences, Personal & Organisational Development and Hotel / Conference Centre Managements.

expanding the ministry

  • 1970s - early 2000s

    Building the Next Generation: Childcare, Art Classes, Outdoor Activities & Swimming Classes for children.

  • reaching out to the community

    The beginning of our New Community Outreach Centre at Lorong 37 Geylang, where we gave befriended & gave free hair cuts to seniors and distributed rations to low-income families.

  • The Toy Library

    Mobile Toy Library with volunteers and hand-sewn toys for children and families.

  • The Metro-Y Youth Lodge

    Youth Lodge for various outreach programmes like Family Fiestas and Children’s Education was built

  • new headquarters

    A new home at 60 Stevens Road, which is where we always save a seat for those who need it the most.

2010s till now

Pivoting through restructuring and continuous development during the pandemic years kept the Association resilient and forward-focused. With people at the centre of our heartbeat, staff remained employed and community outreach remained steadfast.

With the new additions of our Urban Farm, Social Hub (including the restaurant), and E-Mart, the Association seeks to rise up in sustainability, innovation, and community impact, creating long-term value for both people and the environment.
