The first commercial school and tuition classes were introduced at Selegie Road.

The Association bought over the Selegie Road property.

1954
Mr Homer Cheng, President of the Chinese YMCA, died suddenly of a heart attack in the midst of raising funds for the Palmer Road building project.

Sir John Nicoll lays the foundation stone of the new Chinese YMCA building

Dr Chen Su lan was re-elected as President of the Association.

1956
The Palmer Road (South Pier) building was finally completed and occupied. There was provisions made for an Olympic-sized swimming pool, however due to financial constraints, priority was given to the completion of the main building.
The building was the “biggest YMCA building in Malaya’ at that time, consisting of accomodation, an auditorium, a chapel, a library, a gymnasium and a basketball court.

The Palmer Road building was officially opened by the Governor of Singapore, Sir Robert Black, in November.
